Our REDTalks Series celebrates exceptional ideas and performances from Indigenous artists, changemakers, and leaders. This REDTalk features Mohawk singer-songwriter Logan Staats along with guest host Graeme Jonez.

Staats performs two of his hottest songs and dives into his inspirations, dreams, and challenges on the road.

He grew up in Brantford, Ontario with no formal musical training, just a great ear and raw lyrical talent. He played the local music circuit for years before releasing his debut album ‘Goodbye Goldia’ in 2015, an unvarnished yet hard-hitting folk album. His sound draws heavily from the rich blues and rock legacy of Six Nations.

In 2018, Staats won CTV’s ‘The Launch’ where he gained commercial success and toured across North America and Europe. He then made the decision to re-root at Six Nations of the Grand River. “I wanted to bring my songwriting back to the medicine inside of music, to the medicine inside of reclamation."

His music has garnered a Grammy nomination, multiple Native American Music Awards, and the SOCAN Indigenous Songwriter of the Year. Staats now splits his time between Six Nations, Vancouver Island and everywhere in between.

Red Sky at Night is a spectacular evening of live music, dance, spoken word and theatre from a line-up of outstanding national and international Indigenous performers and special guests. Red Sky at Night brings together Indigenous cultures from around the globe as well as artists at the intersection of new and electrifying performances.

From November 3 – 5, 2023, Red Sky at Night is an evening of celebration. This exclusive three-nights-only performance will be held at Canadian Stage’s Berkeley Street Theatre in downtown Toronto. The stellar line-up includes Red Sky Performance, Shane Koyczan, The Bearhead Sisters, Reverb Dance Crew, and the Buffalo Twins.

Red Sky Performance

Red Sky Performance is a leading company of contemporary Indigenous performance in Canada and worldwide. Led by Sandra Laronde, Red Sky plays a pivotal role in the ongoing cultural resurgence, and shines a light on Indigenous ingenuity, beauty, and powerful expression.

Shane Koyczan

Shane Koyczan is an internationally recognized author, poet, librettist, and award-winning spoken word artist. Lauded for his sold-out live performances, his work is moving, hilarious, challenging, provocative, and inspirational.

The Bearhead Sisters

Sisters Trina, Allie, and Carly Bearhead, from the Paul First Nation in Alberta, have been sharing their gift of song with growing audiences for two decades. In March 2023, they took home their first Juno Award for their album, Unbreakable.

Reverb Dance Crew

Reverb is a hip hop and street style dance company that has been making waves for over a decade. Led by Fizz Oladiran, Reverb has transformed into a dynamic and artistic powerhouse that has performed across Canada, the United States, and Europe.

Buffalo Twins

Twin brothers Kirby and Kehew Buffalo, from Samson Cree Nation in Alberta, have danced since they could walk. Prairie dance styles have been a benchmark in shaping their identities as Nehiyaw (Plains Cree) men who take great pride in their culture.

Join us for a thought-provoking panel discussion on The Meaning of a Land Acknowledgement. Hear Indigenous leaders discuss the importance of recognizing traditional territories and a cultural and spiritual relationship to land.

This is a unique opportunity to hear a lively dialogue on what is the meaning of land acknowledgement, how can this be a first step? How can we go beyond an acknowledgement? How can a land acknowledgement lead to calls to action? What are those calls to action?

BEVERLEY JACOBS:
Dr. Beverley Jacobs is from the Mohawk Nation of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy. She is the Senior Advisor to the President on Indigenous Relations and Outreach at the University of Windsor and an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Law.

CLIFF CARDINAL:
Cliff Cardinal is an award-winning writer and performer and a Cree and Lakota born on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Named by The Globe and Mail as a Canadian Cultural Icon in 2022, his solo theatre productions STITCH, HUFF, and CLIFF CARDINAL’S CBC SPECIAL have won numerous awards.

SANDRA LARONDE:
An accomplished arts innovator, leader, and multidisciplinary artist, Sandra is from the Teme-Augama Anishinaabe and based in Toronto. She founded Red Sky Performance in 2000, Canada's leading company of contemporary Indigenous performance in Canada and worldwide.

Our REDTalks Series celebrates exceptional ideas and performances from Indigenous artists, changemakers, and leaders. Our newest REDTalk features AYSANABEE who performs two of his hottest songs and joins Red Sky Artistic Director Sandra Laronde for a conversation about his remarkable journey from journalism to music and his highly successful debut album.

Aysanabee was recently shortlisted for the 2023 Polaris Prize. He was nominated for a 2023 JUNO Award for his debut album and performed live at the 2023 Juno Awards national broadcast on CBC TV. He is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and singer/songwriter currently based in Toronto. Aysanabee is Oji-Cree from Sucker Clan of the Sandy Lake First Nation, a remote fly-in community in northwestern Ontario.

His debut album, Watin, released in November 2022, is named after his grandfather. Featuring the voice and stories of his grandfather, the album is both part music and part journalism, offering a singular new voice steeped in artistry and culture.

Our REDTalks Series inspire, inform, and build ongoing engagement with communities, and contribute to Indigenous cultural resurgence in Canada and around the world.

Miigis: Underwater Panther is about our journey from salt water to fresh water as we explore catalysts for movement, water trade routes, Anishinaabe archetypes, and mystery beings on the incredible journey from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes.

Miigis reveals the transformative power of water and Indigenous prophecy through contemporary Indigenous dance, theatrical innovation, and a fusion of athleticism, music, and media.

We will perform our striking live music, dance, and multimedia work Adizokan for the first time with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra at the Winnipeg New Music Festival on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at 7:30 pm. This exciting work is a fusion of Indigenous dance, film, lighting, and symphony orchestra.
