Fusing contemporary Indigenous dance with athleticism, Miigis explores the catalysts for the Anishinaabe (Ojibway) journey to the Great Lakes and the seven prophecies marked by miigis.
In Anishnaabe culture, the miigis shell represents the perfect breath of life, and informs our travel to the Great Lakes and to a place where food grows on the water known as Manoomin (wild rice). The Anishinaabe called the Great Lakes: Gitchigami Shining Big Sea Water. Lake Ontario, Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie; together form the largest freshwater system on the planet.
Miigis is a co-commission by Fort York National Historic Site, City of Toronto, and the Bentway Conservancy, with the support of Canadian Heritage.
